Funnily enough you can go to most countries in the EU without a passport or a airline ticket if you're European. (you only need an ID card)
But I digress and think you're right.
Probably lots of people simple don't need/want a passport to travel outside of the US.
Otherwise they would have had one
- RamblingCTO 4y agoyou might not even need an ID practically, just legally. I've never been checked at borders or whatever in Europe. Not even when flying to Madeira or exiting/entering the Geneva airport, which is not EU.
