Those that rose slower were able to build a history of political contributions and buy influence to protect against prosecution. If you rose to greatness in 5 years you are likely to get exposed and have not enough favors owed to get out of prosecution

I'd say the more accurate view of the newly-minted rich of this type in the past decade is paper wealth, not marked to market, enabled by loose monetary policy. Forbes considered Elizabeth Holmes a billionaire less than ten years ago, but since then revised it down to zero.
