I prefer the latter, but it is perfectly ok to associate the former as part of the same hacker ideal. While that may be your opinion -- and I don't necessarily disagree with it -- the point remains that the author took Zuckerberg's comments about hackers to mean that he considered himself what we know as a "black hat" hacker, which he clearly did not.
