Oh nice, yeah Melbs CBD has always been that way - or at least since the early 90s, which is as far back as my memory of it goes. We spent most of our adolescence in a comparatively car-free utopia and didn’t even appreciate it. There’s a lot more that could be done, of course - in particular, expanded car-free zones in the ex-CBD inner-city suburbs. Go from the CBD down Punt or Sydney Rd, for example, and the sudden change in air quality is pretty telling. Don’t reckon anything on that score will improve within our lifetimes though.
