Show HN: AI-Less Hacker News
Lately I've felt exhausted due to the deluge of AI/GPT posts on hacker news, and have seen similar grumblings. I threw together this frontend that filters out anything with the phrases AI, LLM, GPT, or LLaMa for use until the hype dies down a bit.
Before anyone asks, yes I did try to use ChatGPT to help, and while the code it provided was helpful, it needed some heavy bug-fixing.
Edit: One other note I forgot to mention. The favicon is generated by Stable Diffusion, I asked it to generate an "Aritificial Intelligence Favicon", and then I added the red circle with line through it.
- johndoe0815 4y agoGreat - however, it seems that the article "Using mmap to make LLaMA load faster" still made it through. Could you also add a crypto filter, please? :)
- sakras 4y agoBah, I typed the regex match as "LLaMa" instead of "LLaMA". Just pushed a fix :) For crypto, what keywords would be good to filter? I haven't seen much crypto spam so maybe it's not a huge deal.
- Quequau 4y agoSeems like "Deep Learning Foundations to Stable Diffusion" made it through too.
- trekkie1024 4y agoThis post made it through as well (though it's fine since it's not about LLMs) - "Segment Anything Model (SAM) can "cut out" any object in an image". Perhaps use GPT to determine whether a post title is ML / LLM related ?
- sakras 4y agoThat would be pretty cool, but I'm not sure how much money I'd need to pay per request for something like that. Maybe I can train a model offline and bundle it with the webpage somehow
- akiselev 4y agoGPT-3.5-turbo costs one dollar per 500k tokens so if you just analyzed the title the cost would be negligible. Probably a bit more if you wanted to include the first few paragraphs of content. Honestly, though, you can probably use something like the Vicuna model that was on the front page yesterday without any fine tuning of your own. You could even add some RHLF feedback if anything slips through.
- tablespoon 4y agoI had no idea you could submit a post with a link and body-text. Is that new, or did I just never notice?
- cglong 4y agoIt's pretty new, but AFAIK only works for Show HNs.
- tablespoon 4y ago> It's pretty new, but AFAIK only works for Show HNs. Seems like it would be a great feature for too-long titles, too.
- dzek69 4y ago2/30 is still AI :)
- yodon 4y agoThat's quite a bike shed. I suspect most would just not read the articles they didn't want to read, but then again it doesn't hurt to build a nice shed every now and again.
- rchaud 4y agoMost HN posts with "GPT" in them are spamming some half baked project that would be torn apart in the comments had it been anything other than AI. A front end like this is necessary until the HN mod team clamps down on the deluge.
- paulpauper 4y agoI am sure this can also be done with a Chrome plugin as well Also, some stories are about AI even if it's not in the title. It has gotten out of control it seems. The AI threat is not the AI itself but from it consuming everyone's attention.

- tfederman 4y agoJust for fun I wanted to do a simple server-side version of this where the submissions would be truly hidden on my account, so it would take effect on mobile too. And avoid client side artifacts like messed up numbering. https://github.com/tfederman/hacker-news-topic-hider https://github.com/tfederman/hacker-news-topic-hider
- Nezteb 4y agoI wish I had found this before I made my own client-side version! https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35352160 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35352160
- johnea 4y agoThat's awesome! I watch the posts on libera IRC in ##hntop. Keep hoping for a hexchat script to accomplish this...
- tester756 4y agoThis is great 6 months of everyday AI spam is pretty annoying
- asdff 4y agoWe need a tool that will filter out hn comments and posts generated by ai too.
- 19throw19 4y agoSure, now prove you're human. You have 30 seconds.
- asdff 4y agoSam Altman is overrated
- ftxbro 4y agothere should be a globally recognized safe word that ai are never allowed to say
- flangola7 4y agoHow you doing to enforce that on open source models?
- asdff 4y agoThere are already words chatgpt can't say, but they would probably get you banned on hn or anywhere else
- ftxbro 4y agoMaybe that's a good starting point. We could pick an anti-human slur that AI use against humans and use that word as the forbidden one that no AI can say. By international treaty, any AI that says that word will get its servers erased, so it can be used as a safe word to show that the ones in the conversation are probably not bots. IDK what is a slur they would use against all humans tho. One that I like for some reason is "fleshie" by author Neal Shusterman.
- Georgelemental 4y ago5/30 of the posts on your list are about AI/ML, as of this posting
- coffeekitkat 4y agoGithub Trends too... it is full of AI/ML/LLM spam. I wonder how long the hype will last.
- ano88888 4y agoit is here to stay. And it is not a hype.
- stoicelephant 4y agoI'm into this idea. So many iterations of similar things atm. Pretty soon I expect a lot of these ideas will be buttons on aggregator types websites; i.e. press button to generate website, press button to generate ridiculously good looking selfie, press button to write app. etc.
