Ask HN: Besides Video Games what is stopping you from running Linux full time?
- efnx 4y agoMy company’s product runs on macOS and Windows, which means most of the day I’m on one of those.
- danielovichdk 4y agoEsoteric and low level stuff is keeping me away. Having had bad experiences with drivers, disks and the alike. Time. Convenience. But it's actually a really good question.
- adastra22 4y agoEnergy usage. Proper suspend. Trackpad software that doesn’t suck.
- scblock 4y agoFor work? Ignoring corporate computer supply, the short list is MS Office, PVsyst, ArcGIS, WindFarmer, Windographer. Most niche industry software is based on windows. I can do a lot with QGIS (which I love), but there's no real replacements for the other tools that are cross platform. You can do a lot with SAM or pvlib, but you can't produce a bankable energy assessment using them. WINE may be a possibility, but at that point we're just on Windows. For not work? I use a Mac most of the time, and have a laptop that runs Linux which I use for some specific tasks.
- billconan 4y agoI only use Linux on desktops. For laptops, Linux's trackpad driver can't match that of the MacOS
- hitpointdrew 4y agoNothing.. I dual boot and only use Windows for games.
- nathants 4y agosame. it’s great.
- mindcrime 4y agoNothing. I do run Linux full-time.
- yuppie_scum 4y agoThe apple ecosystem empowered by your Apple ID is so seamless. AirPods, AirPlay, airdrop.. all Just Work and it’s such a pleasant experience.
