Just out of curiosity and I know the latter can be intrusive setting things back up again, but have you tried restarting and resetting your phone to make sure it’s not some weird glitch that’s causing it to not take? *EDIT* I found it, disabled auto-join, restarted my phone, and auto-join is still disabled.
