Apple stood up against carrier customisation. No custom firmware, boot logos, or pre-installed bloatware. Upgrades occurred when Apple was ready to release them, not years later than carriers had finished their "testing". This was fairly revolutionary at the time. This is definitely a backwards step contrary to that vision of career subordination.
