OSS is trending too commercial
Shifting from RH/CentOS model to pseudo-free, walled-garden, and AGPL.
- Opscode->Progress Chef now requires an Oracle-like login.
- Canonical now requires Pro licensing for security updates.
- Grafana Apache 2.0 -> AGPL (radioactive).
- Minio Apache 2.0 -> AGPL (radioactive).
- MongoDB AGPL -> SSPL (even more radioactive).
Seems like CFEngine3, SugarCRM footgunning.

- wmf 4y agoVCs force-fed too much money into open source startups and now they have no choice but to un-open themselves.
- tjr 4y agoAGPL is too commercial? How so?
- bruce511 4y agoI'm not really sure of your parameters here; it's unclear what you mean by radioactive (except presumably that it's bad) But from your headline, OSS and Free should be commercial. Finding a reliable income stream while keeping code open is the holy grail. Most programmers would like to share code, but they also have to eat. One is an ideal, the other is practical necessity. So when push comes to shove, money plays a part. Kudos to these companies for trying to find a good model. I'm not sure we've found it yet, but when we do, it'll be game changing.
