Coal Age is the magazine of the Coal industry.
A recent editorial gives a world wide view.
US exports are increasing because other countries understand the long term need for dispatchable base load.
Often overlooked in the "get rid of coal" narrative is that Coking Coal is required for the production of iron and steel.

- ZeroGravitas 4y agoCoking coal is currently used for iron and steel, but it's not required.
- throwayyy479087 4y agoIt basically is. There’s a few test plants for steel made with hydrogen but nothing serious
- desmond373 4y agoSouth Australia (my home state) just announced that our main steel plant will be switching to methane and hydrogen instead of coal. The plan is eventually to switch to almost 100% green hydrogen.
- throwayyy479087 4y agoMany green plans are laid. I’ll celebrate if it comes to fruition

- Schroedingersat 4y agoI love how you put dispatchable fossil power -- ie. Gas peakers -- and coking -- one of the most promising avenues for replacing gas peakers with dispatchable loads and increased VRE production -- as two reasons for keeping coal long term. Industry dinosaurs in dying market with an unbroken history of denying reality when it benefits them denying reality to reassure investors isn't a great argument either.
