The banks here (Australia) are just using a bunch of dark patterns to push what they want, more electronic and less in branch staff which means more profits and money for the shareholders. ATMs have limits so no 'ing surprise they are used less. With the arrival of covid, people tended not to be passing an ATM every second day. It is also getting harder to find the bank's ATM, well up my neck of the woods - they're slowly being removed. They are also trying to phase out phone landline and mobile phone (not an app) based banking by way of introducing some upgrade that now borks more times than succeeds.
I must admit there's also a push (from some parts of govt and vested groups) for the general public to use less cash and moooarrr traceable electronic transactions.
