It's mind-blowing that there are still parts of tech that don't understand the paradigm shift. You have far more to lose now as a company sucking up to China than you have to gain.
- rainytuesday 4y agoHow do you figure there "is more to lose"? Access to the Chinese market is in the profit column. What do you put in the loss column to counterbalance the profit?
- coldtea 4y agoThere's no paradigm shift in business, it's always money talks and BS walks. There are billion dollar deals with China happening all the time, from any company you know, from huge companies Apple and Amazon essentials to whatever clothes brand. If Midjourney needs to adjust later because of pressure they'll do it then.
- moose_man 4y agoThat worked maybe in 2021 or early 2022. That's what I mean by paradigm shift, there's been a hard shift in the last 6-8 months, since Pelosi went to Taiwan and the US started restricting investment in computer chip technology. Not to mention Xi's visit to Russia or the counter actions targeting Micron (or the fucking balloon). With the McCarthy visit this Wednesday, you can expect things to get more tense. Any company that looks like it is curtailing free expression in the US to appease China is in for a bad time. That's what I mean by paradigm shift, things that were once accepted are no longer acceptable.

- moose_man 4y agoWhy would you ban the name of the Chinese leader other than to appease either Chinese investors or Chinese censors?
- verdverm 4y agoFrom my understanding, the founder's philosophy is to stay out of politics and other divisive or "ethical" topics. This is not the only thing they ban, pornography is another. You are ignoring the large context
