Hard agree with the parent comment: In terms of dice, it's the equivalent of swapping out a 100-sided die (1-100) with a 10-sided die (41-50 or 51-60, depending on how you view the Internet). You're assuring yourself some minimum that you can hit, in sacrifice of the highs you could've gotten otherwise. (This comes from someone who is extremely fearful of negative outcomes. It didn't help that my school practiced corporal punishment on us when I was still a child, just for getting answers wrong. (Note: Not from the US.))
