It has been suggested this removal saved Tesla less than $150/car. Far be it for me to defend lord elno, but $150 is a pretty hefty amount in automotive circles. Car manufacturers (especially the Big 3) do all sorts of shit to save literal pennies on unit cost. The idea is that their cars are sold in such high volume they're saving a ton of money. Of course it's myopic since that doesn't account for customers' willingness to pay a bit more here and there for a higher quality product.
