I agree, I don't think the way they distill this to a single number and present it as an apples-to-apples comparison is very helpful. There's too much variability in what the "central city" is, and I think it's quite challenging to determine a useful number to compare between metros as they are laid out so very differently. The maps themselves are interesting and potentially even useful, on the other hand.
