I actually know the author (my daughter went to pre-school with two of hers) and she is a perfectly grounded and no-nonsense parent. Cities are way safer today than in the 80s when I myself was growing up and as a 11 year old it was perfectly normal for me to commute by train and Tube from Reading, UK to Kensington, London for school with my 7 year old brother in tow. I aim to instill the same confidence in my daughter, albeit a year later.
