I think this advice is subsumed by the more general heuristic that managers should basically understand and be able to do their direct reports’ jobs. If they understand the importance of focus and flow state, they will also understand the cost of interruptions.
- lfciv 4y agoOne thing I love about the company I'm currently at is that pretty much every eng manager does some level of IC work. Meaning they all have some pulse on the codebase beyond higher level planning.
