Think about the quote in their story:
'"I don't want to eat the bugs. I don't want to live in the pod. I don't want to be trapped in a digital jail, and nothing they can do will make me," she said. Memes with similar wording have been circulating on social media.'
If you were a journalist trying in good faith to put your finger on the pulse, what would be the important social-political-economic story behind this quote? The story isn't 'a conspiracy theory about eating bugs'. It's about deeper things like the disruption of the power process in modern society, falling life expectancy in USA, reduced ability of young people to buy houses, increased deaths of despair, etc.
- anigbrowl 4y agoThis is a valid read, but it would be facile to ignore that the 'I don't want..' sentiment on 4chan (or more specifically, on /pol/) is heavily correlated with 'Bill Gates put a5g microchip in the vaccine'/'climate change is a lie'/'everything I don't like a Jewish plot' etc. etc. If it were truly centered on the structural woes of (mostly) English-speaking developed countries, you'd expect to find a wide variety of political perspectives and proposed remedies, vs the seething bigotry that predominates.
