Maybe add a filtering DNS (Pi-hole for example) and add a truckload of adlists to it.
That will need some fine-tuning at first (and also another device at his house) but especially with a daily update of the adlists this should prevent him from going to the most common scam URLs...
If he's using his phone on the go, maybe throw in Wireguard/OpenVPN into the mix and make sure that it connects as soon as he leaves his home Wifi...
- yrro 4y agoBlocking newly registered domains also helps a great deal. This is one of the reasons I pay for NextDNS and set my parents' network up to use it.
- intelVISA 4y agoPiHole would be great here imo, throw in some HTTP/3 blocking and it's an easy way to keep his devices free from ads and other badware.
- rl3 4y agoThere's always Firewalla if OP is looking for something more low-maintenance/turn-key. As far as I'm aware their software stack is OSS.[0] I haven't used their hardware myself, but I'd be curious to hear any experiences. While on the expensive side, they seem to do a good job of targeting the "I don't want to mess with this nor maintain it on an ongoing basis because I don't have the time" demographic.
