I never understood why people have extensive lists of file extensions in their .gitignore files, for example `.DS_Store, .so, .dll, .pyc, .pyd, *.bak, ...`:

I find it much easier to list the file extensions I wish to track:

- blondin 4y agowell, for you. but i find it easier to add new rules to ignore files rather than adding rules for not ignoring them. the extensive lists you see today all started small too. (well there are a few default lists now). they grew up a line at a time, the way yours is doing right now. it would also be easy to miss a file if you start with ignoring everything.
