I don't expect that language is required. Using input frames of video (or any other complex sensory input) instead of words might work too. Transformers are a tool for building representations from high-dimensional data sources. Also, I don't think GPT-4 is conscious. If you ask it whether it is, it will say no. It does not appear to exhibit preferences or anything like suffering.
