I have an academic background and I feel exactly the same. I find it difficult to take anything not backed by data seriously, unless it's pure opinion (and presented as such). However these kind of posts are commonplace and often very popular. Sometimes I refrain from writing if I can't find data to back up my point. Maybe I overestimate the importance that people place on these things.
