New Law Mandates Interlocks on New Cars, but Drunk Driving Tech Isn’t Ready Yet
- Kon-Peki 4y ago> Passed last year, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act asks that within three years, new cars would be equipped with drunk-driving deterrents automakers don’t yet know how to comply with. That's not what it says [1] (search for "SEC. 24220" and read subsections c, d, and e). It says that within three years, the Secretary of Transportation shall issue a final rule (which will take effect at least 2 years later) unless it is determined that it is not possible to do this within that timeframe, in which case the Secretary of Transportation is allowed to extend the deadline until is is actually possible, but the Secretary has to make annual report to Congress describing why it is not possible.
