I don't think it's an absurd metric at all. I think it's terribly unfortunate. Software optimization on the whole would be a lot better off if developers took a lot more time to think about the scale of the products they work on and if users refused to put up with software and systems that don't respect users' time and agency. If someone wants to calculate the lifetimes lost to Windows Update, I'd be interested in knowing how it compares to historical wars.
