If AI successfully progresses to AGI, then that becomes a potential reality. However, from the current point until then is a vast gap of uncertainty. There is a lot of focus on creating an "aligned" AGI. Theory being that it will be benevolent and helpful. However, there is little focus on the societal ramifications that will happen on our pursuit towards AGI. Before we even make it there, the question is can we maintain a stable social order? Can we keep sanity as we enter an era of unverifiable truth and reality?
