BananaHackers Wiki – KaiOS modding community
- floren 4y agoI had high hopes for KaiOS, but they (KaiOS and the manufacturers, not the hacking community) have chosen a path that makes them even less attractive than Android devices: locked down devices that have to be jailbroken, and ads injected into apps, whether the dev wants them or not. I also see lots of complaints about devices getting sluggish after a couple months, and then of course the manufacturers rarely update the OS.
- meghan_rain 4y agoI see a big opportunity for KaiOS to be the "detox phone OS", the one you chose when you want to give your brain a bit of a break from the dopamine hits that fullblown smartphones bring with them
- sverona 4y agoI've done exactly this. I don't really think dopamine fasts are scientifically sound but I find that life is more enjoyable when I'm not constantly tethered to the news.
- meghan_rain 4y agoCan you tell a bit more about your experience? What made you do a detox, how you did the detox, what was good, what was hard?
- sverona 4y agoIt's ongoing. I ditched my smartphone for a Nokia running KaiOS and a Bangle.js. It took a couple weeks to break the habit of compulsively checking my phone, which was nice, but everything is so much nicer when you literally do not have an Internet-compatible device on you. The hardest thing was giving up Discord, which was something I wanted to do anyway for free-software reasons, but I've found life more appealing in the real world anyway. When I do want to talk to other people like me far away, I find that many of them maintain their own websites and are more than happy to talk. This is my utopia.
- meghan_rain 4y agoThanks and good luck!
- meghan_rain 4y agoBtw, you can still access Discord on a laptop no? This was my plan: when I work (on my laptop), I use all the latest and greatest, Electron-powered wasm scripts running LLMs on a blockchain through VR goggles - but when I close the lid, I am back to a baseline 2000-ish calls and light texting only mode.
