I agree with your evaluation, though I'd also add that there was quite a bit of concern about no longer being able to get licenses for FCP 7 that took quite a while to get cleared up (IIRC, it wasn't possible at all to get them, at least from Apple, for a few weeks). I think that's what really took it from a "calm down, stick with what already works until the new infant version is suitable for you" story to a "this could really mess up some businesses" story.

True as well. I'd put that in the "botching the release" part
