The effect of this (and the example given in the top SO answer) is significantly magnified when flying to and from Undeveloped countries. When I was in Africa I flew out of, and then back into Mali, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Egypt. Booking the tickets to do so while sitting in those countries was up to half the price of booking it from the Developed country I was flying into. I was just using kayak.com in Incognito and the price differences were staggering.
