I would not mind more permanent (subsets of) standards on all platforms. The only stable environments that seem to exist are accidental, being emulators for dead platforms like Dosbox or UAE. Software for a modern, non-dead, platform is almost guaranteed to run at best for a few years before it, as they say, rots.
