They are 2nd largest contributor to OpenJDK (Oracle is 1st obviously). They maintain the older releases - 8 and 11. It's mainly thanks to them that freely available maintenance releases of JDK 8 an 11 still exist.
- sverhagen 4y agoThat's truly admirable, but on a little tangent here: how sad is it if you still have to be on Java 8. Sure, there's probably a small few good reasons for an exceeding small amount of users, but all those enterprises that won't go with the times just because their compliance team won't certify an upgrade, I feel for those folks.
- toyg 4y agoIt's not the formal certification that's the problem - it's the actual breakage in very old code that everyone expects and nobody wants to deal with.
- sverhagen 4y agoThis may well be... And I don't mean to argue over it, but it's just so hard to imagine, having been through this myself, and it's never been very hard, given how stable the JVM has generally been. It's not like I'm asking to upgrade from Python 2 to 3.
