Tell HN: The scary thing about GPT-4 is that people might use it
I've played around with GPT-4 like I'm sure several other HNers have.
I'm entirely unfazed by the torrent of articles informing me how it will soon do all our jobs.
But I'm worried about the lack of articles about how dangerous it is that people might actually use its output for anything impacting the real world.
It's a neat parlor trick, but the amount of nonsense it spews is on par with that of my 3 year old (don't get me wrong, my son is awesome! but he's 3, and when a 3 yrld tells you something, you take it with a few grains of salt).
My main concern as of now is not that the model will overtake us, but that people start using it for stuff without deeply inspecting if the results are right.. For instance, in automated systems.
Heck, I caught it cheating in our tic-tac-toe game.. It placed 4 pieces but we were playing with only 3.. I informed it about this, and it said sorry, proceeded to remove it's 4th piece and.. Placed it again.
Sure, it can be a neat tool for exploring stuff, in a domain you know well enough that you can catch the errors, but don't rely on it for anything, please. Because stuff will break, results will be wrong.
Is there anything more peak-dystopia than a society filled with broken AI stuff everywhere? People going about their daily lives constantly adjusting their behaviors so the machines don't get it wrong? Decisions being made based on faulty logic applied automatically by infant AIs ?
- GianFabien 4y agoAI has been in use for several years, many deployments being far less robust than GPT-4. Just one of many examples being facial recognition / profiling. Unfortunately, there already are (and in the near future will be many more) who use AI naively and worse still maliciously. The AI genie is well and truly out of the bottle and will never be put back in. All we can do is to be even more vigilant and be on the lookout for nefarious and poorly vetted uses of AI.
- bruce511 4y agoEvery step forward leads to good, and bad, outcomes. Technology (in any form) is neutral, but can be used for good, bad, or incompetance. When Airplanes were invented, their first "killer app" was as a tool of war. It would be the 1950's before commercial air travel became a "thing", and well into the 60's before it became accessible to "regular people". Today we don't think any more about taking a plane than we do a bus. One could make a similar argument about cars, about phones, radio, tv, and so on. Nuclear has the ability to generate lots of electricity, or blow things up. Sure, you can be "worried" about it, but it's not like that worry means anything. Progress is happening. It will be used for good, and it'll be used for bad. It'll be used by people who know what they are doing, and it'll be used by those who don't. Welcome to, well, everything.
