AI and the American Smile
- foldr 4y agoInteresting, but when looking at old photos they're forgetting the issue of exposure time. In the days when film typically required multiple seconds of exposure, subjects were focusing on keeping still; this makes it more difficult to smile. I'm not suggesting that Apaches at the beginning of the 20th century would have been grinning like teens on TikTok, but it may have an influence.
- brudgers 4y agoI am not sure, but my intuitions are: + Portrait paintings predating photography don't portray people smiling in that way...nor do most post-photography portrait paintings including present day portrait paintings. + The selfie smile seems a recent addition to visual literacy. But I could be wrong and don't care if I am.
