I've been in this field for 20 years and I'd say no. Compared to back then, the market for software seems incredibly saturated, there's more people making (or trying to make) money from these kind of hypes now than in the past, and it seems increasingly desperately so. That said, humans do have a tendency to romanticise the past - forgetting the bad and the weird.
