Methinks they do protest too much.
The world is already over-populated, with 'Earth Day' or whatever it's called coming earlier and earlier every year. Ground water is nearly depleted, arable land is disappearing under cities by the day, fish are calculated to be wiped out within a decade or two.
At the moment we are living off our future resources, what you might call our 'seed grain', the stuff we need to get our future harvests, the stuff which allows sustainability. At some point, and very soon, that 'seed grain' of future resources will be all gone too. Then, oops, no more ground water left, no more arable land, no more fish. We will starve. And the numbers of humans will drop precipitously.
You might also liken it this way. We are broke. We have no more cash, so we spend off our credit card. When that credit card no longer works, we have to starve.
