I had an IBM motherboard that had an odd enameled wire on it that stuck out like a sore thumb. It was a 486/33 that someone had hotwired to be more like a 486/100. Local computer shop showed it to an IBM rep that said he'd never seen anything similar. It was not as fast as a real /100, but was quite fast for the money.
