Top Reddit communities for Devs and ITs: from beginners to advanced
- hardware2win 4y ago>r/cscareerquestions 966k >This includes all questions related to a career in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, and related fields. Need advice to get into programming? Or want to get a promotion? Need to pour your heart out? You're in the right place! One of the weirdest communities ive ever seen It feels like a community of people who try to brute force or hack themselves into MAAMA companies instead of computer enthusiasts
- Firmwarrior 4y agoThat place is a disaster zone. The hyperdemocratic nature of Reddit is usually cool, but in this case it results in Reddit's dummy hive mind squelching a lot of useful advice and promoting a really weird outlook
- konart 4y ago>It feels like a community of people who try to brute force or hack themselves into MAAMA companies instead of computer enthusiasts Well, it's not 90s or 2000s anymore. For many people all this IT stuff is just a weird but well paying place. You'd be amazed by the number of IT "schools" and all kinds of online courses in Russia (for example, I don't thing the coutry is unique here) that promise you an IT job.
- jstx1 4y agoIt's not meant to be a place for computer enthusiasts - it's a career subreddit and people want to get good jobs.

- fellerts 4y agoSurprised to see r/Embedded and r/microcontrollers under "Experts". Is the article implying that embedded development is the domain of experienced devs? I'd beg to differ and put those under "Embedded development". Also throw in r/Arduino 577k.
- swarnie 4y agoI would like to share my favourite post from one of the mentioned subs - SysAdmin https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/6fborr/a_typical_thread/ https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/6fborr/a_typical_... OP is a well known hardass, prone to Sunday evening whiskey-fuelled rants but he's summarised why i stopped coming to the forum a few years ago. Not sure what the mods have done with it since.... Its best use at the time was for day one Microsoft update breakages and backbone internet outages, if you were willing to pick though all the rant/helpdesk posts.
- avg_dev 4y agoThat was very entertaining. Thanks for posting.
- sebstefan 4y ago>r/Conspiracy 1.9 million >The Conspiracy subreddit is a thinking ground. There are no any jokes, but issues which have captured the public's imagination, from JFK and UFOs to 9/11. The community is intended free thinking, not hate speech. Hasn't that one turned into a conservative shithole?
- swarnie 4y agoRight of centre and not necessarily USA-focused, basically a white whale on Reddit.
- ohgodplsno 4y agor/conspiracy used to actually be quite joking and fun. But, no, it's turned into deep, deep MAGA dreams, russian agitprop and people that legitimately need mental help. Hate speech is half of what is in threads.
- joshspankit 4y agoFurther evidence of the hypothesis that sarcasm pushed far enough loops around and becomes truth.

- avg_dev 4y agoInteresting post. I have bookmarked it. I’m probably going to check out the software gore one for a few mins just to make myself feel sick. Unrelated, but despite not programming in C or C++ in several years, I have always enjoyed reading PVS Studio blog posts as I come across them. It is fun to think about static/dynamic analysis (I actually am not sure where the line is) and language design.
- thefz 4y agoEverything under the Sysadmin section is either memes or ranting. For anything else, it's either photos or screenshots that read "lok at this and solve my problem". Reddit has gone downhill for years.

- TecoAndJix 4y ago+1 for r/netsec - they keep most of the blogspam and occasionally have some good thread discussions
- haunter 4y agoMildly related but /r/buildapc is also really good if you are not just building a PC but have some hardware related questions (though it’s generally Windows and gaming focused)
- fabian2k 4y agoI find Reddit rather disappointing for software development topics. Depends a bit on the specific subreddit, but the quality of both the questions and the comments is pretty low. There are a few exceptions and some active users with deep knowledge that provide very good answers. But there are also a lot of questionable answers. My subjective impression is that e.g. on the r/reactjs subreddit a lot of users are quite inexperienced. While on the r/csharp and r/dotnet subreddits the user might be more experienced, but you also get very strong opinions that suggest solutions I'd consider overengineering without even considering the complexity.
- dariusj18 4y agoOddly /r/ProgrammerHumor and comments are often is more interesting and informative than most of the other serious subreddits.
