> I think one of the things that really separates us from the high primates is that we’re tool builders. I read a study that measured the efficiency of locomotion for various species on the planet. The condor used the least energy to move a kilometer. And, humans came in with a rather unimpressive showing, about a third of the way down the list. It was not too proud a showing for the crown of creation. So, that didn’t look so good. But, then somebody at Scientific American had the insight to test the efficiency of locomotion for a man on a bicycle. And, a man on a bicycle, a human on a bicycle, blew the condor away, completely off the top of the charts.
> And that’s what a computer is to me. What a computer is to me is it’s the most remarkable tool that we’ve ever come up with, and it’s the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds.”
~ Steve Jobs
ChatGPT is motorcycles for our minds.
- it_citizen 4y agoFast and fun but dangerous and unforgiving if we don't anticipate potential dangers? :)
- good_boy 4y agoMore like moped, powered, with small wheels, definitely not off-road. Still good if you don't mind going the same way again and again. Or going "in the wild" only to find out someone is already there. BTW, animals do make tool. Even some insects (ChatGPT told me last night :)).

- atchoo 4y agoI fear it's more like "a butler for our minds". The more it serves us, the more indulgent, flaccid and incapable we will become. When our butler invitably degrades, we will have forgotten how to serve ourselves. At least with bicycles we were still pedalling.
- meghan_rain 4y ago> When our butler invitably degrades Why should it? Any more than, say, the global economic system providing us with gasoline at the gas station, which we rely on?
- ThrowawayR2 4y agoRather a dubious choice of analogy since there was a massive gasoline shortage in the US in the 1970s: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/piapeterson/photos-1970s-fuel-shortage-prices https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/piapeterson/photos-1970...
- zamnos 4y agoIs it though? Despite that hiccup in the gasoline supply chain, we're only just now, 50 years later, getting away from the ICE to electric cars.
- musicale 4y agoLooking forward to our WALL-E style future.
- latexr 4y agoThe point of the bicycle is that it is propelled by and enhances the effort of the human on it. A motorcycle depends on, and thus is useless without, an external source of fuel.
