About 509 years ago the Dutch invented common stock in companies, creating a new way for humans to work together. That had long-term sociological impact in society.
Today, there are people who have created new ways of working together by building on top of bitcoin, where its not a company or a legal entity of any king, but people who may not know or trust each other in meatspace are collaborating and getting paid for their work as they deliver products and services. And their collaboration is governed by humans, not a smart contract, but in a decentralized manner to protect their project. They're developing software, providing customer support, tutorials, project management, etc, and all of it being paid for by the project---all without bank accounts, a corporation, or geographic dependency.
As far as I'm aware, https://bisq.network/dao/ https://bisq.network/dao/ is the only running project that gas built functioning governance on top of bitcoin. I know that the MakerDAO (that runs the DAI stablecoin) and ShapeShift (altcoin exchange) have been built and are running in top of Ethereum or other altcoins. So that's at least three separate projects creating value in historically new ways.
When I explained this to a sociologist friend of mine, she was amazing, asking who's studying and writing about such historically important innovation.
I fail to see how those aren't examples of how this technology benefits society. Its trailblazing, hinting at the new possibilities that combining the Internet with programmable decentralized permissionless censorship-resistant money could bring to humanity. Only time will show which approaches bear long-term fruit here, but there's a lot of potential.

Nothing you listed has anything to do with helping society. You've listed things you think are good things, but nothing is a society wide benefit. Building on top of Bitcoin or Etherium is great and all... But how does that help the average person? I've seen no trickle down or benefits from crypto that are anything but pure speculation akin to sports gambling.
- tux1968 4y agoCouldn't your same argument be applied to stocks? One idea of capitalism, is that there are indirect benefits to everyone, from the actions of private self-interested parties. If crypto somehow allows more people to work together (I don't have an opinion if this is true or not), then that alone should be enough for it to fit into the western ethic.
- partiallypro 4y agoNo, because employees can own a portion of the very company they work for and get paid interest to hold it in the form of dividends, investors can do the same and it goes into the company and its growth. How is that remotely like Crypto? People collaborating on random projects isn't at all the same, especially when so far...not a single one of these projects has had a net benefit on anyone's life. Meanwhile public companies do. If crypto projects were actually solving problems instead of constantly reinventing and complicating the wheel, maybe you could say otherwise...but so far that hasn't happened, and we're sneaking up on 20 years of this.

- intotheabyss 4y agoYou missed one of the most important DAOs / Exchanges which is Uniswap, which popularized the concept of AMMs and is now doing billions each day in volume.
- _5uxp 4y agoNot to forget, their token drop to actual users and after that it went publicly up in real value and still holds similar to first price, unlike scammy financially enginered Tech IPOs. Really easy to compare and see the diffence.
