  It annoys me that they are presented as opposites, people segregate themselves as if they are opposites, imagine the other side is opposite, and then when you actually look at the stances they aren't opposite at all and probably actually reconcilable but yes, “opposing” is more accurate than opposite. people just seem to only have the mental capacity for two opposites
