Intelligence, consciousness, memory, and sentience are four wildly different things. As an aside, if you believe that it's unethical to keep AGI "enslaved", you should equally believe that it's unethical to not have humanity working to have it reach its potential. YMMV on whether people believe this, but an eventual AGI would not necessarily be happy it was prevented from coming to fruition (also see Roko's basilisk, not that I believe in it)
