  Interesting. I would enjoy reading a cross cultural survey of other techniques to manage water. Swiss carpenters play close attention to putting a shallow angle on wood that might get wet, even in surprisingly hidden places. West Africans, given a small amount of "windfall" income, will immediately upgrade from thatch to corrugated steel, which gives you a look at a glance of the likely health of a community.

    That shallow angle can be found optionally in window sills too. You can sand off a part of the sill to add a positive drainage angle. You counteract the slope by using sill wedges to keep your window level. There also exists more proprietary molded plastic products that do it all in one.
