TikTok is part of China’s cognitive warfare campaign
- oriettaxx 4y agosummarized by Chatgpt: The nature of warfare is shifting towards controlling the opponent's mind, with China investing heavily in cognitive domain operations, including AI research in brain-inspired software and decision making. Platforms like TikTok exemplify cognitive influence, shaping the beliefs and preferences of its vast user base while collecting data and developing psychogenic profiles of its users. Foreign biometric data collection on Americans is increasing, with users unwittingly providing facial recognition data through TikTok's filters and games, but also through other technology deployed in the United States. The development of brain control weaponry is becoming a reality, with Chinese scientists researching the damaging effects of various weapons on brain tissues and the development of brainwave interference and infrasound weapons. Addressing cognitive warfare requires a multifaceted approach that goes beyond banning apps like TikTok. It requires securing global rights and norms to individuals that secure their right to cognitive liberty, mental privacy, freedom of thought, and self-determination over our brains and mental experiences. Raising public awareness of the risks associated with digital platforms and neurotechnology devices by promoting digital literacy will empower individuals to make informed decisions about their online presence and the devices they use. Encouraging open dialogue and transparency among governments, the private sector and citizens will foster trust and facilitate collective understanding of the battle for our brains.

- seydor 4y agoThis text is weird. Written about neurotechnology by a profesor of law. What is psychogenic and how are we to believe the author knows what she is talking about? The american culture has been far more influential than anything tiktok has been. The US army is running NNN https://www.darpa.mil/program/next-generation-nonsurgical-neurotechnology https://www.darpa.mil/program/next-generation-nonsurgical-ne... And both are great. This retro cold-war-revival in the western press has gone a bit too far, does it really sell that much?
- jjgreen 4y agoIt is bizarre indeed that a British newspaper is so concerned about Chinese "mass collection of personal and biometric data from American citizens", perhaps they could investigate the collection of the same on the British by American companies.
- secondary_op 4y agoAccording to article author bio[1], she is pretty much U.S. centric, so my guess is that theguardian is just platform to amplify her agenda. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nita_A._Farahany https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nita_A._Farahany
- secondary_op 4y agoFrom mentioned report[0] In the wake of the U.S. Brain Initiative[1] initiated in 2014, all the major powers (EU/China/ Russia) have launched their own brain research programs with substantial fundings. Discussions about the ethical implications of advanced technologies and their potential misuse should be addressed universally, irrespective of the nation or organization involved. Article by Nita Farahany is hypocritical. [0] https://www.innovationhub-act.org/sites/default/files/2021-01/20210122_CW%20Final.pdf https://www.innovationhub-act.org/sites/default/files/2021-0... - photochemsyn 4y agoHave we gone back to the 1950s - 1960s obsession with thought control? That era birthed the CIA's MK-Ultra progam of research in 'behavioral modification', the 'winning hearts and minds in Vietnam' effort (also called 'pacification'), along with other psychology-inspired behavioral research & social manipulation programs. A lot of this seems to have taken off in the 1950s with Ford Foundation funding for programs at places like Stanford, e.g. https://casbs.stanford.edu/news/casbs-origins https://casbs.stanford.edu/news/casbs-origins Claims that the Chinese government is running social engineering programs aimed at American citizens are identical to the justifications for the Johnson/Nixon Operation MHCHAOS CIA-led program that ran from 1967 to 1974, and its partner progam COINTELPRO run by the FBI around the same time - i.e. fears of foreign infiltration: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_CHAOS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_CHAOS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COINTELPRO https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COINTELPRO The US government is caught in a Catch-22 situation, however - it's clear they want a population that's susceptible to domestic propaganda and that lacks critical reasoning and analysis skills and isn't skeptical of media and government pronouncements, and which has 'faith in institutions' (the same goal the Chinese government has with respect to its own population), but this kind of population is just as susceptible to foreign propaganda as it is to domestic propaganda. The only real solution for anything approaching a free and open society is to improve education for all and teach skills like logical reasoning, research and analysis, etc., all informed by a healthy dose of basic skepticism.
