Sometimes I think that 3D doesn't actually exist. Just a fudgey gloss linking the way we see with a nice way to model it. A convenient illusion.
It's hard to rationalize because it is fundamentally irrational.

- detourdog 4y agoWould you credit Brunelleschi for this illusion https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filippo_Brunelleschi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filippo_Brunelleschi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perspective_(graphical) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perspective_(graphical)
- swayvil 4y agoI'd credit biology, culture... the usual authors of our thinking.
- detourdog 4y agoYou would describe as an innate and obvious part to the environment. Interesting how something that took 1000s of years to articulate is just innate to the layperson in the modern world.
- swayvil 4y agoNo doubt there are many cases of exactly that. And articulation is of rather arbitrary value. I wouldn't put it on a pedestal.
- detourdog 4y agoI'm not putting it on a pedestal. I'm afflicted with the need to know the source of beliefs. It could be with more study one might find the value is anything but arbitrary. I guess I should bow out of this thread since I'm never really sure what we are discussing. One certainly doesn't need to understand the foundations of understanding to get by in the modern world. I can't really cope without knowing the roots of why we do what we do.
- pdpi 4y agoWhat do you mean, 3D doesn't actually exist?
- detourdog 4y agoThat is why I asked about Brunelleschi. Since that is where I think our system of understanding 3-D came from.
- guyomes 4y agoAs a side remark, it is probable [0] that Brunelleschi built his understanding of perspective from the Books of optics [1], written by Ibn al-Haytham around 1020 AD. - swayvil 4y agoI mean that the world isn't actually composed of a 3d space filled with 3d stuff. That 3d is just a way of thinking about it.
- detourdog 4y agoThat is how I read the comment but wasn't sure. I asked about the source of 3-D space I was aware of.
