Ask HN: New Midjourney API – Why are they using Discord?
Hey everyone,
I recently built a tool called https://thenextleg.io that allows you to experiment and integrate Midjourney, the AI image generation software, into your workflow and automate your Midjourney interactions. I've noticed that Midjourney uses Discord as its interface, which is why I thought it'd be helpful to create an API for it.
I'm curious, has anyone else wondered why Midjourney uses Discord? Personally, I think it's an interesting choice, but it may not be for everyone. That being said, if you're interested in trying out a different way of interacting with Midjourney, feel free to check out https://thenextleg.io.
I also created a 1-minute YouTube video to demonstrate how to use the tool, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLC1xq_2yAM.
Let me know your thoughts on Midjourney and Discord, and if you have any questions or feedback about The Next Leg, please feel free to share!

- basiljalapeno 4y agoYeah, the only other thing I might be able to think of is that they decided Discord allows them to get all the feedback they need for reinforcement learning? ie. You're essentially forcing/suggesting users to respond with emojis and interactions to get the feedback you need. Hard to say if this is actually the case however...
- jameswan 4y agoThe feedback is all the usage data. Isn't that natively available to the admin of the Discord channel, and every HTTP request they make. That's how they are able to move from v1 to v5 using RLHF
- brianjking 4y agoInteresting. Does this violate Midjourney's TOS at all?
- basiljalapeno 4y agoThanks for bringing that up! I'm not actually not sure if using Midjourney through our API would violate their TOS. It's probably a good idea to encourage everyone to read the TOS carefully and make an informed decision. In the meantime I've reached out to their team just to inquire at any rate.
- jameswan 4y agoYou may not use automated tools to access, interact with, or generate Assets through the Services https://docs.midjourney.com/docs/terms-of-service#:~:text=Midjourney%20reserves%20the%20right%20to,generate%20Assets%20through%20the%20Services https://docs.midjourney.com/docs/terms-of-service#:~:text=Mi....
- wdb 4y agoFeels like it’s to raise the bar a bit higher to use it in an automated manner and becomes for casual user who found its way to Discord.
