  The idea was dismissed was that the object was a "hydrogen iceberg"; the idea in this paper is that cosmic rays caused the object to evolve a lot of hydrogen internally which was stuck inside until it got warmed by sunlight. Much more plausible than the "alien solar sail" hypothesis that got so much press.
