In my experience, a lot of task coordination is expected of engineers themselves. Of course managers still pass things along from higher levels, but it's common for teams to dole this work out within themselves. In theory, this should free managers up to do more meaningful work - ensuring their directs are happy and have the tools to achieve their career goals.
