  Much software still works like that, for free. The software that can't be released free often has users that require features that need constant maintenance. API integrations, for instance. These features aren't really optional anymore to be competitive.

  Yeah some, and a lot of the time you'd be running it with gaping security holes. There's no way little snitch can keep on top of OS and network updates without a decent amount of ongoing maintenance.
