Repurposing Thin Client Hardware
- rektide 4y agoConfirmation bias ahoy but when this came up a couple months ago the comments often pointed out these are often very ancient cores, availability can be spotty, and prices can run high. They also can be unupgradeble, and or just have radical compromises like cheap boot mediums. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33791069 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33791069 Generally I think the 1L mini-pc market has completely crushed this once-useful second-gand market in terms of value. These tiny business machines are made in such huge volume. Places like woot sell nicely refurbed i-6500t's with decent ram load out for like $150. Idle could be a tiny bit better but is still usually below 11w for even modern models, which have gotten much beefier than the old quad cores. Newer models will have nvme. There is a t740 thin client that has a fairly modern V1756B ryzen, zen 1, 14nm. I really like the embedded ryzen chips & would love some systems around them. The unit is $850 new and $300 on ebay though, which feels not hot to me.
