Well yeah, obviously modified chips can be a vulnerability… the real challenge is in translating this kind of “image” based analysis to techniques that can potentially be used in non destructive ways to verify the integrity of a device that you can still use after verification. Such as developing mechanisms to do this kind of analysis using high resolution/detail X-ray techniques.
