While I can't argue spreadsheets are a programming language, I would put forward that they are definitely a programming gateway drug for analysts. At least, from my experience, having to easily handle more rows than could be represented in an Excel sheet was what pushed me to SQL and Python. With powerBI and various other data modeling tools, those constraints aren't nearly as vicious as they used to be, but even 10 years ago they were insurmountable in vanilla 32 bit Excel.
